    Gareth Knight(Author)
Selected letters of occult author Gareth Knight, written over a period of forty years and to over seventy different people. These include learned discourse with academics, exchanges of strange experiences with esoteric colleagues, and advice to seekers trying to find their path. The letters reveal extraordinary, entertaining and personal details of the life and work of a contemporary occultist."One fault of many occult students is to read too much ... all too often the new student is so interested in reading the latest thing that he never gets round to actually doing any of it.""I suppose you can at least feel what it is like to be 'a lone voice crying in the wilderness' ... I think even John the Baptist, in time, would have packed up his traps, said 'Sod it' (or 'Sod them') and gone home, maybe to start a locust and wild honey farm.""Your remark that the devil works by compromise and subtlety is altogether too glib a simplification. He works equally well through uncompromising 'principles' very often. The thing that bothers me though is your preoccupation with the insinuations of the devil, which seems at times to verge on 'old maid's insanity'. I get the impression - I hope wrongly - that I stand a good chance of being cast in the role of the serpent offering the poisoned, or forbidden fruit."

Gareth Knight is one of the world's leading authorities on modern esoteric studies and the Western Mystery Tradition, with a career as an author, publisher and lecturer which spans more than 50 years. His books include "A Practical Guide to Qabalistic Symbolism", "Magic and the Power of the Goddess", "The Magical World of the Inklings", and a biography of Dion Fortune, "Dion Fortune and the Inner Light".

Review Text

I enjoyed this book. Having read many of Gareth Knight's titles over a long time I found it very interesting to 'peek in' as it were on his correspondence and see how his views changed or were reinforced over the years. Not being an autobiography reader I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did.I found it threw more light on areas that he has written about over the years and I would be fascinated to see in print the book on crystals, angels and cosmic forces etc.that he has being mulling over for quite a time.

After reading and enjoying a number of Gareth's books and knowing his involvement in various esoteric societies I purchased "Yours Very Truly" expecting an interesting read. The book consists of a number of letters between Gareth and a variety of people, some of which I had heard of, many of which I had not. If you are well acquainted with Gareth and the people in this book then no doubt it is a fascinating read, for me however, being quite uninformed, it was dry at times. Having said that, I would still very much recommend this book to those interested in Gareth and the societies he has been involved with as there are a number of golden pieces of information.

Yours Very Truly is a collection of letters by Gareth Knight, which will provide both insight and entertainment for those interested in magic, the Qabalah, the vagaries of esoteric publishing and a vast array of literary and intellectual subjects. Knight crafts a good old fashioned epistle, almost always erudite but so often full of humour and acerbic wit also. Come and share in the human side of one of the most respected and accomplished figures within the Western Mystery Tradition."I suppose you can at least feel what it is like to be a lone voice crying in the wilderness - I think even John the Baptist, in time, would have packed up his traps, said `Sod it' (or `Sod them') and gone home, maybe to start a locust or wild honey farm."The letters span some forty years, beginning in 1969 with a letter to the poet Kathleen Raine. Other recipients include R. J. Stewart, Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki, Alan Richardson, Ronald Hutton, John and Caitlín Matthews, Wendy Berg, Sir Michael Dummett and Warren Kenton.

To publish some 40-50 years of ones personal correspondence takes bravery. In this book we see Gareth's personal opinions and ideas laid bare, not in a way that tires the reader, but in a steadily unfolding display of wit, candor, and literary skill I only wish I had. Esoteric students rarely see "behind the scenes" in esoteric society, much less get to be privy to the conversations one might hear if one were a "fly on the wall". Much to be digested for those with "an eye to see". We can only hope that the autobiography mentioned takes form in the physical quickly, and that the Gods of the keyboard look favorably on us all with several new books in the coming years from Gareth.
